Quantum gravity and holography provide some of the sharpest microscopic successes in black-hole physics—and some of its easiest extrapolation traps. The six records in this field ask where observables, protected state counts, explicit geometries, holographic reconstruction, de Sitter proposals, and experiments are genuinely controlled. The evidence cutoff is 2026-08-20.
From gauge invariance to empirical discrimination
Section titled “From gauge invariance to empirical discrimination”Operational Observables in Quantum Gravity begins with a structural constraint: local coordinate-labelled fields are not gauge invariant, while gravitational dressings and relational references change localization and subsystem structure. The question is not whether experiments are possible, but which operator, reference system, boundary condition, and perturbative order make a claim meaningful.
Scope of String Black-Hole Microstate Counting then examines a major positive result. It distinguishes protected indices from absolute degeneracies and selected BPS/large-charge matches from a universal count of generic black holes. Fuzzballs and Microstate Geometries asks a different question: whether known smooth solutions are typical and entropy-dominant, dynamically formed, and observationally populated—not merely explicit and regular.
The holographic records test the reach of duality. From AdS Unitarity to Evaporating Black Holes follows every extra assumption between a unitary closed boundary theory, a gravity-plus-bath model, a Page-like curve, and recoverable radiation. de Sitter and Cosmological-Horizon Holography compares global wave functions, static-patch algebras, lower-dimensional models, and string-background control without forcing them into one dictionary. Phenomenological Evidence for Quantum Gravity closes the chain by asking whether any measured effect uniquely selects a quantum-gravity mechanism.
| Record | Finite question | Decisive evidence type |
|---|---|---|
| Operational observables | Which gauge-invariant observables and approximate subsystems exist in a declared regime? | Constraint analysis, explicit dressings, relational algebras, and measurement protocols |
| String microstate counting | Which microscopic quantity matches which macroscopic entropy? | Protected indices, charge/chamber control, localization, and precision coefficients |
| Fuzzballs and geometries | Do constructed families cover typical finite-area states and their dynamics? | Quantized phase-space growth, typical observables, stability, and formation |
| AdS and evaporation | Which steps from boundary unitarity yield a radiation state and recovery map? | QES/recovery theorems, exact Hamiltonians, fixed-theory factorization, and decoder error |
| de Sitter holography | Is there a complete positive observer-accessible microscopic description? | State space, trace/inner-product positivity, real-time observables, and UV control |
| Phenomenology | Has a measurement uniquely identified quantum gravity? | Mechanism-specific forward models, calibrated likelihoods, backgrounds, and replication |
Choose an entry route
Section titled “Choose an entry route”If you prefer constrained dynamics, begin with the asymptotic-charge project. Read the local gauge/relational background, then reconstruct the dressing theorem in its stated boundary conditions. The first deliverable is a boundary-term calculation, not a new definition of quantum spacetime. You need perturbative GR and QFT, with canonical-gravity supervision for a serious extension.
If you prefer microscopic counting, use the protected-count project before the counted-sector comparison. Extract a charge dictionary and approximation hierarchy from the first paper, then the counted state space and saddle domain from the second. CFT, supersymmetry, and generating functions are practical prerequisites. A supervisor working on compactifications or supergravity is important; generic black-hole intuition is not enough to decide which traces are protected or which modes are independent.
If you prefer quantum information, start with the code-reconstruction project. Linear algebra and channel theory permit a finite reproduction on a laptop. Turning it into a holographic claim requires an actual code, state family, and bulk error estimate. The static-patch trace project is a more advanced alternative for readers already comfortable with KMS states and operator algebras; it is not the default next step after introductory AdS/CFT.
If you prefer measurable consequences, try the entanglement-and-noise project. Extract the prepared state, phase model, witness, and mediation assumptions separately. A small density-matrix calculation is accessible without laboratory equipment. An experimental proposal needs a platform, a quantum-control collaborator, and measured background budgets before a sensitivity claim is credible.
All six routes provide bounded first products. Before choosing a thesis direction, discuss whether your group can supply the missing technical expertise and whether the proposed extension survives a literature search. A clear unresolved coefficient, operator, or discriminator is a more actionable starting point than a commitment to an entire quantum-gravity programme.
How the questions connect
Section titled “How the questions connect”The observable question is prior to every other claim: a microstate count, entropy, correlator, or experimental witness is meaningful only after its state space and operator are defined. Protected string counts supply controlled microscopic evidence but do not determine whether typical states have smooth classical representatives. Explicit microstate geometries can test that representative question without replacing the index/degeneracy comparison.
AdS reconstruction uses a restricted code subspace and a boundary algebra; applying it to evaporation introduces a bath, a subsystem split, and a saddle/entropy interpretation. De Sitter changes the boundary and observer problem again, so analytic continuation cannot silently import the AdS state space or inner product. Phenomenological tests sit at the far end: even a real anomaly is evidence for quantum gravity only if the mechanism-to-observable chain distinguishes it from conventional fields, astrophysical populations, environmental noise, and other exotic compact objects.
Background theory and research results
Section titled “Background theory and research results”The Library provides durable foundations in gauge symmetry, relational observables, and locality, supersymmetric black holes and protected entropy, microstates and fuzzballs, holographic entanglement and reconstruction, de Sitter holography, and operational quantum-gravity tests. The research pages compare the results and their limitations through the stated cutoff dates.
Comparing results in this field
Section titled “Comparing results in this field”Protection, duality, and consistency are powerful but local in theory space. An index is not automatically an absolute degeneracy; a smooth solution is not automatically typical; a recovery theorem on one code is not a state-independent operator on the full Hilbert space; a type-II algebra is not a finite microscopic model; and an effect compatible with a quantum-gravity parameterization is not a detection. Each record makes the missing bridge a testable requirement rather than a rhetorical caveat.
