Semiclassical black-hole physics joins a classical geometry to quantum matter, then asks how far that hybrid description can be trusted. The six records in this field separate three kinds of statement that are often compressed into one: conditional entropy theorems, controlled calculations in specified models, and microscopic interpretations that require additional assumptions. Their common evidence cutoff is 2026-08-20.

From entropy balance to interior structure

Section titled “From entropy balance to interior structure”

The natural starting point is the Scope of the Generalized Second Law. It asks where monotonicity of generalized entropy is actually proved and exposes the role of the horizon, state, algebra, and perturbative order. Self-Consistent Black-Hole Evaporation then raises the dynamical bar: the state, renormalized stress tensor, geometry, energy balance, and approximation error must be evolved together.

The endpoint is a separate question. Evaporation Endpoints and Remnants compares what semiclassical theory determines before curvature reaches its cutoff with additional ultraviolet assumptions about disappearance, remnants, bounces, or transitions. It treats nonselection as a scientific result rather than converting ignorance into equal support for every scenario.

The remaining records concern information and interiors. What Island Calculations Establish distinguishes a controlled Page-like entropy calculation from a fixed-theory density matrix, decoder, or four-dimensional S-matrix. Factorization, Ensembles, and Gravitational Path Integrals asks what connected topologies compute and whether an ensemble, an unconditioned baby-universe state, or an incomplete source sector explains apparent nonfactorization. Firewalls, State Dependence, and Interior Consistency finally isolates the exact entropy contradiction and compares which premise each proposed interior changes.

RecordFinite questionDecisive evidence type
Generalized second lawWhich horizon, state, algebra, and perturbative domains have a monotonicity theorem?Relative-entropy proofs and explicit subleading limitations
Self-consistent evaporationHas a state-plus-geometry solution been controlled from collapse through the relevant regime?Renormalized stress tensors, constraints, energy balance, and approximation hierarchy
Endpoints and remnantsDoes a controlled theory select a generic endpoint?UV-complete dynamics or a model-independent no-go theorem
IslandsWhat does the replica calculation establish about the radiation state?Saddle/contour control, fixed-theory interpretation, and recovery observables
FactorizationWhy do connected gravitational amplitudes coexist with boundary factorization?Exact model dictionaries, reconstruction theorems, and source-sector completeness
Interior consistencyWhich premise of the old-hole entropy contradiction changes?Algebra assignment, controlled error bounds, and overlap-consistent interior operators

These subjects share vocabulary but require different daily work. Choose by the calculation you want to become good at, and by the expertise available in your group.

Entropy laws and mathematical structure. The GSL proof project is appropriate if you enjoy tracing hypotheses through a proof. Read relative entropy and horizon geometry first, then follow the algebra inclusion and area relation in one primary derivation. The concrete output is an annotated proof with the sign-bearing steps exposed. Modular theory and algebraic-QFT supervision are the main resources; more numerical examples cannot replace them.

Backreaction and numerical dynamics. Begin with the two-dimensional coupled solution, then separate its endpoint from the boundary prescription. You should be able to vary an action, check constraints, and distinguish a quantum state from a flux ansatz. The initial analytic and residual checks need modest computing. Four-dimensional state-plus-geometry evolution requires a specialist group, renormalization expertise, and much more demanding numerical infrastructure.

Quantum information and holographic models. Reproduce a quantum extremal surface if CFT entropy and controlled approximations appeal to you. Choose the interior-consistency project if density operators and quantitative error bounds are a better starting point. Both begin on a laptop, but neither elementary example supplies the microscopic radiation state of a real evaporating hole.

Path integrals and spectral statistics. The connected-amplitude project starts with one gluing integral and one explicitly defined average. Learn the measure and normalization before attempting a topology expansion. Progress toward a new result needs random-matrix or gravitational-path-integral expertise and a precise fixed-theory or ensemble question.

A useful first adviser meeting brings a recovered equation, a failed or successful control, and one hypothesis you propose to change. “Solve the information paradox” leaves too many independent problems unspecified. A finite proposal identifies an observable, state family, approximation, and criterion that would make the calculation inconclusive as well as successful. Check subsequent work before treating any candidate extension as open.

The dependencies are directional. A generalized-second-law theorem does not supply an evaporation solution, but a proposed solution should satisfy the applicable entropy law. A self-consistent evolution may approach a high-curvature regime without determining its endpoint. An island saddle can alter the semiclassical entropy branch without deciding whether the underlying path integral is ensemble-valued. A factorization mechanism can explain the entropy calculation without producing a simple decoder or a globally state-independent interior.

The interior record therefore sits last, not because it is less fundamental, but because it consumes assumptions from all the others: late-time purification, near-horizon effective field theory, a subsystem or algebra split, and a microscopic meaning for the entropy. Keeping those inputs visible prevents a Page curve from being used as proof of smoothness, or a smooth correlator from being used as proof of global unitarity.

Researchers evaluating a new proposal can use a shorter route: identify its horizon and state; ask whether it solves the geometry or only evaluates an entropy; determine whether the observable belongs to one theory or an ensemble; and check whether the claimed interior operators act consistently on overlaps and superpositions.

Definitions and derivations live in the Library: proof strategies for the generalized second law, Hawking flux, backreaction, and evaporation dynamics, endpoint regimes, replica wormholes and islands, factorization and gravitational path integrals, and interior consistency. The research pages compare results through their stated cutoff dates, including counterexamples and tests that could change the conclusions.

A lower-dimensional solvable model is mechanism evidence in that model. A Euclidean saddle is not automatically a Lorentzian history. An entropy equality is weaker than equality of density matrices or an explicit recovery map. A regular effective metric is not an endpoint unless the state, stress tensor, conservation law, and ultraviolet regime are controlled. These distinctions are the field’s main protection against conclusions that outrun the calculation.
