AdS/CFT gives unitary evolution for a complete boundary theory and a quantitative map between boundary entanglement and semiclassical bulk regions. An evaporating black hole is a more specific dynamical system: radiation must escape into a defined subsystem, its state must be recoverable, and the bulk description must remain controlled. At the 2026-08-20 evidence cutoff, holographic unitarity, quantum extremal surfaces, and code-subspace reconstruction establish major parts of this chain in controlled models. Their extension to generic four-dimensional or asymptotically flat evaporation remains contested.
Helpful background. Holographic Entanglement, Quantum Extremal Surfaces, and Reconstruction develops RT/HRT, generalized entropy, and entanglement-wedge recovery.
Closed AdS is not an evaporating experiment
Section titled “Closed AdS is not an evaporating experiment”A reflecting AdS boundary returns radiation. A large stationary AdS black hole can be in thermal equilibrium within a closed unitary boundary system, so boundary unitarity alone does not specify an outgoing radiation subsystem or a Page experiment. To model evaporation, one may couple the boundary or bulk to an absorbing bath. That coupling changes the Hamiltonian, factorization, and observable whose entropy is computed.
| Assessment at 2026-08-20 | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Question status | Partially resolved |
| Evidence status | Supported overall: established for unitarity and reconstruction in controlled holographic domains; contested for generic evaporation |
| Confidence | High |
| Domain | Declared boundary-plus-bath Hamiltonian, state family, large- order, QES branch, and code subspace |
| What could change the conclusion | A fixed-theory evaporating model with explicit recovery and controlled errors |
The finite question is therefore a chain of implications: does the chosen model evaporate, does a fine-grained radiation entropy turn over, does an interior algebra enter the radiation wedge, and can a decoder recover state-specific information with quantified error? Each step adds hypotheses.
A starting project: test reconstruction on a declared code
Section titled “A starting project: test reconstruction on a declared code”Choose this entry point if you can manipulate isometries, partial traces, and quantum channels. Read the linked entanglement-wedge background, then the finite-dimensional theorem in Dong, Harlow, and Wall 2016, §III, Eqs. (14)–(22). Extract the code space, the two subsystem decompositions, the complement-state condition, and the requirement that the operator and its adjoint preserve the code. These hypotheses do the work; an evocative picture of a wedge does not replace them.
Implement one explicit small encoding isometry and a chosen logical observable. Solve for an operator supported on the proposed accessible subsystem whose action agrees on the code. Verify the operator identity on a basis and its coherences, not only on a sample of diagonal states. Then enlarge the code by a stated additional state and repeat the reconstruction test. A counterexample to reconstruction on the larger code identifies a failed hypothesis; it does not refute the theorem on the original code.
The deliverable is an exact linear-algebra calculation and a notebook reporting reconstruction residuals, code dimension, and operator norms. A laptop suffices. Connecting this example to gravity requires holographic expertise: one must establish the entropy/relative-entropy relation and control bulk errors for an actual state family. The toy code supplies neither an evaporating Hamiltonian nor a radiation decoder.
A candidate extension is a quantitative approximate-recovery analysis for a specified noisy channel or changing code. Review existing recovery bounds and model studies before choosing it as research. Pivot if the bulk-to-boundary map is unspecified or if a successful existential construction is being sold as computationally efficient. The finite project clarifies exactly what additional dynamics an evaporation claim still needs.
Entropy geometry and its quantum correction
Section titled “Entropy geometry and its quantum correction”The Ryu–Takayanagi prescription relates boundary-region entropy to an anchored minimal area in static holographic states Ryu and Takayanagi 2006, complete Letter. Hubeny, Rangamani, and Takayanagi extend the construction to covariant extremal surfaces Hubeny, Rangamani, and Takayanagi 2007, §§2–4. Anchoring, homology, causal consistency, and saddle dominance are part of these statements.
At the first quantum order, bulk entanglement across the surface corrects the area term Faulkner, Lewkowycz, and Maldacena 2013, §§2–4. Extremizing the resulting generalized entropy yields a quantum extremal surface. The regulator must be common to the area counterterms and bulk entropy; neither term is independently universal.

What reconstruction actually guarantees
Section titled “What reconstruction actually guarantees”Dong, Harlow, and Wall show that equality of bulk and boundary relative entropy on a code subspace implies a boundary representation of operators in the entanglement wedge Dong, Harlow, and Wall 2016, complete Letter. This is an existential quantum-error-correction result. The representation depends on the code and region, and it need not be simple, efficient, or valid on arbitrary black-hole microstates.
Enlarging the code gives an immediate stress test. If two states have identical reductions on the proposed radiation region but different expectation values for an alleged reconstructable interior observable, no operator supported only on that region can represent it on the enlarged code. Recovery claims should therefore quote the state family and error norm, not only draw an entanglement wedge.
Islands add a radiation subsystem
Section titled “Islands add a radiation subsystem”In gravity coupled to a bath, replica wormholes can produce a nonempty island and a Page-like entropy curve Almheiri et al. 2020, §§2–6. This is strong positive model evidence: after the transition, the radiation wedge can include an interior region. It also depends on the bath coupling, replica contour, saddle set, analytic continuation, and fixed-theory or ensemble interpretation.
An entropy curve is not a density matrix, a scattering matrix, or a practical decoder. It constrains information flow but does not identify the microscopic channel. Nor does it alone prove a smooth state-independent interior. The AMPS contradiction remains an adverse requirement on any proposed local interpretation Almheiri et al. 2013, §§2–3.
Competing choices of radiation algebra
Section titled “Competing choices of radiation algebra”The bath is not the only proposal for defining radiation. Laddha, Prabhu, Raju, and Shrivastava use an algebra on a segment of future null infinity that contains the Bondi mass aspect, shear, and matter operators; under their holographic-storage assumptions its fine-grained entropy is independent of the segment’s upper cut Laddha et al. 2021, §4, Results 3–4 and Eqs. (4.1)–(4.5), pp. 20–21; “The Page curve in flat space?”, pp. 25–26. Antonini, Chen, Maxfield, and Penington instead define the proper radiative algebra using matter fields and Bondi news through while excluding the nonradiative ADM and Bondi masses. They argue that this proper algebra follows a Page curve and agree that the enlarged algebra containing is cut independent Antonini et al. 2025, arXiv:2506.04311v1, §3.2, Eqs. (3.6)–(3.9), pp. 21–22. The competing conclusions therefore concern different subsystem algebras.
The frontier proposal also gives a finite-distance construction for radiation from a small AdS black hole and an in-principle measurement protocol using swaps or tomography on many identically prepared evaporations Antonini et al. 2025, §§3.3–3.4, Eqs. (3.10)–(3.12), pp. 23–26. Exponentially many repetitions and exponential logical precision make this an operational existence argument, not a practical decoder; it does not determine a microscopic density matrix from one evaporation. Continuing integer Rényi data to von Neumann entropy assumes a replica-symmetric branch Antonini et al. 2025, §2.1, Eq. (2.2), pp. 6–8. Its related compact-dressing result is perturbative on backgrounds without exact isometries, with extra restrictions from approximate time-translation or rotational symmetry Antonini et al. 2025, §§4.1 and 4.6, pp. 27 and 36–39. It is not a microscopic evaporation S-matrix or a controlled derivation for generic four-dimensional collapse.
Counterexamples, null results, and failed routes
Section titled “Counterexamples, null results, and failed routes”A reflecting equilibrium black hole is the basic counterexample to the inference “unitary AdS/CFT implies an emitted Page curve”: the complete system is unitary, but no external radiation subsystem exists. A Page curve in an averaged path integral is likewise not automatically a state-specific curve for one fixed Hamiltonian.
Other failed routes include treating an existential reconstruction theorem as an efficient decoder, applying a code-subspace operator to the entire Hilbert space, ignoring alternate QES branches, and extrapolating low-dimensional bath models directly to asymptotically flat collapse. These failures delimit the conclusion without diminishing the controlled holographic results.
The converse overstatement also fails: the original bath constructions do not prove that a nongravitating reservoir is necessary. The massless-gravity counterproposal makes the radiation-algebra choice explicit, but it remains a frontier extension with the copy, symmetry, analytic-continuation, and nonperturbative limitations stated above.
What would change the assessment
Section titled “What would change the assessment”A decisive advance would be a fixed microscopic Hamiltonian that forms and evaporates a black hole into an explicit radiation subsystem, reproduces the semiclassical geometry with bounded errors, yields state-specific radiation data, and supplies a recovery map whose error is verified across a declared code. A controlled limit connecting that system to four-dimensional asymptotically flat evaporation would broaden its relevance.
The verdict would weaken if the necessary replica saddles were excluded by the correct contour, if reconstruction errors became order one on the claimed state family, or if factorization failed for the supposedly fixed theory. Each test must keep the Hamiltonian and subsystem algebra fixed.

Source and data map
Section titled “Source and data map”RT/HRT provides the leading entropy geometry; FLM provides the loop correction; relative-entropy equality provides code-subspace reconstruction; island models provide the evaporating-bath mechanism; the asymptotic-algebra papers supply competing definitions of gravitating radiation; and AMPS supplies the consistency stress test. No independent reproduction was completed; in particular, no decoder or many-copy measurement was run for this assessment. Reproduction requires the Hamiltonian, precise subsystem algebra and charge content, QES branches, regulator, state family, relative-entropy error, fixed-theory or ensemble definition, identical-copy protocol, replica continuation, and background symmetries.
