The replica method converts entropy into a family of integer-copy path integrals. In gravity, the bulk fields and geometry are integrated over, so saddles may connect replicas even when their nongravitating interiors would be separate. This chapter follows that logic from cyclic boundary gluing to replica saddles, wormhole topology, the island formula, an executable evaporation benchmark, and finally the unresolved continuation and contour questions. Every conclusion is tied to a declared model; a two-dimensional success is not silently promoted to a universal four-dimensional theorem.
Helpful background. Semiclassical Gravity supplies generalized entropy and saddle expansions; Quantum Information supplies reduced states and Rényi entropies; Quantum Fields in Curved Spacetime supplies regulated matter path integrals; Black-Hole Information supplies the Page-curve problem and QES selection developed earlier in this volume.
From moments to geometry
Section titled “From moments to geometry”For a normalized reduced state , the integer moments and Rényi entropies are
A Euclidean path integral constructs by taking copies, cutting each along , and gluing the upper bank of copy to the lower bank of copy cyclically. Dividing by is essential: the unnormalized replicated partition function is not a moment of a unit-trace density operator. If a suitable continuation exists,
In nongravitating QFT the background geometry remains fixed. In a gravitational region one integrates over compatible metrics and matter fields. The saddle set can therefore include connected configurations. Assuming a replica-symmetric saddle, quotienting by the cyclic symmetry produces a fixed locus with cosmic-brane tension
As , the brane becomes tensionless and regularity yields the QES stationarity condition. The distinction between the integer construction and its continuation is central to the derivation in Lewkowycz and Maldacena 2013, §§2–4.
Paths through the chapter
Section titled “Paths through the chapter”The six pages appear in the required sequence: Replica Construction of Rényi Entropy, Gravitational Replica Saddles, Replica Wormholes, The Island Formula, Solvable Evaporation Models, and Replica Symmetry, Continuation, and Contours.
The derivation route takes all six in order. It tracks the normalized moment through bulk saddle evaluation, quotient geometry, limit, extremization, and minimization. The executable model then compares a grid calculation of the Page crossing with its independent analytic value.
The assumption route begins with the replica construction, then reads the two saddle pages and the final continuation page before accepting the island formula. It is designed for readers asking which topology, symmetry, contour, and ensemble premises enter a result. Both routes distinguish a von Neumann entropy from a multi-copy swap observable and a fixed theory from an averaged gravitational answer.
Wormholes and the island rule
Section titled “Wormholes and the island rule”Replica wormholes join the gravitating parts of different replicas while leaving the prescribed bath cuts and asymptotic data intact. Their on-shell action can compete with the replica-disconnected saddle. In the replica limit, the fixed locus of the connected saddle becomes the boundary of an island and gives
The empty island remains a candidate. Early in evaporation it commonly dominates; later, a nonempty island can have lower generalized entropy. Explicit JT-gravity bath calculations exhibit this exchange in Almheiri et al. 2020, §§2–5. The formula uses the joint algebra of , not the entropy of by itself. For a single ideal Bell pair shared between these regions, but . This elementary example explains how including partners lowers the matter term; whether it outweighs the gravitational cost still requires the QES calculation.
The executable page uses a dimensionless surrogate with an analytic stationary point and branch crossing. It is deliberately a reference calculation, not a simulation of the JT field equations. Its purpose is to expose resolution, residual, state-preparation, and boundary-condition dependence without disguising a toy model as gravitational dynamics.

| Replica quotient and conical fixed locus, Lewkowycz and Maldacena 2013, §§2–4 | Semiclassical holographic replica saddles with replica symmetry and regular continuation | Does not prove uniqueness of continuation or specify every gravitational contour |

A permissive interpretation regards the convergence of independent semiclassical calculations as evidence that replica wormholes capture a broadly universal entropy mechanism. A conservative interpretation treats them as controlled saddles in specified low-dimensional or holographic models until a contour and a single-theory microscopic definition are supplied. A third, operational interpretation emphasizes swap entropies of repeated preparations rather than the von Neumann entropy of one unknown state. These competing positions differ over what the gravitational path integral computes, not over how cyclic gluing works at integer .
An adverse check is immediate: if one forbids connected topologies, the island saddle disappears even though the boundary gluing is unchanged. Conversely, allowing a formal connected solution does not show it lies on the integration contour or dominates. Replica symmetry breaking can also invalidate the quotient used to infer a single cosmic brane.
The conclusions could change after a controlled Lorentzian or Euclidean prescription fixes the integration contour, after a replica-symmetry-breaking saddle dominates near , or after a microscopic single-theory calculation reproduces or contradicts the island moments without ensemble averaging.
Review the chapter
Section titled “Review the chapter”Diagnostic. Let . Compute and show why an unnormalized path integral cannot be inserted without dividing by its one-copy normalization.
Solution
. For , the raw replicated trace is , while . Dividing by recovers the normalized moment. Without that division, the inferred Rényi entropy would depend on an arbitrary overall path-integral normalization rather than only on the quantum state.
The next chapter asks what connected gravitational saddles mean when the boundary theory is expected to factorize.
