The interior of a stationary charged or rotating black hole contains a Cauchy horizon, but a dynamical interior also contains radiation. The infinite blueshift of that radiation changes the problem qualitatively: a metric may remain continuous while its derivatives, internal mass, and curvature become singular. This chapter develops that hierarchy without collapsing causal character, tidal strength, metric regularity, and determinism into one word.

Helpful background. Black-Hole Geometry and Mechanics supplies the stationary reference solutions; Black-Hole Perturbation Theory supplies exterior tails; Formulations of General Relativity supplies characteristic evolution; Causality and Global Structure supplies maximal developments and extensions.

From the exact interior to a dynamical boundary

Section titled “From the exact interior to a dynamical boundary”

Begin with Reissner–Nordström and Kerr Interiors. The exact metrics fix the outer and inner horizons, trapped region, and Cauchy-horizon meaning. They do not establish that the repeated analytic extension survives perturbation.

Blueshift at the Cauchy Horizon then derives the exponential amplification measured by a freely falling observer. The Mass-Inflation Mechanism adds gravitational backreaction: counterstreaming flux can drive the quasi-local mass and curvature to infinity while the areal radius tends to a finite value Poisson and Israel 1990, §§II–IV, pp. 1797–1807.

The next two pages classify what that blowup does and does not imply. Weak Null Singularities distinguishes divergent curvature from integrated tidal distortion. Regularity Across Cauchy Horizons separates C0C^0, connection-level Sobolev, and C2C^2 extension questions.

Finally, Criteria for Nonlinear Black-Hole Interior End States compares the rigorous and computational evidence without extrapolating a spherical matter theorem into a generic rotating-vacuum conclusion.

Every interior claim should answer four questions.

No row determines another. A null boundary can be regular or singular. A curvature singularity can have a continuous metric. A C2C^2 obstruction does not establish C0C^0 inextendibility. A result generic in a spherical charged data space need not be generic among nonsymmetric vacuum data.

The rigorous spherical hierarchy is particularly instructive: continuous extendibility and generic C2C^2 inextendibility coexist for the Einstein–Maxwell–scalar model under precise two-ended asymptotically flat assumptions. The interior implication is conditional on an averaged polynomial lower bound for event-horizon radiation Luk and Oh 2019a, Theorem 5.7, p. 29, with proof in §11, pp. 58–61, PDF; the companion exterior analysis proves that lower bound generically in its stated weighted topologies Luk and Oh 2019b, Theorems 4.1–4.3, pp. 17–18, PDF. Near Kerr, a nonsymmetric vacuum analysis proves continuous extension across a nontrivial Cauchy-horizon segment for specified interior data Dafermos and Luk 2025, §4, pp. 50–65, and §16, pp. 165–185, PDF.

The 2026 exterior result now supplies a narrower rigorous bridge: Hintz reports that its decay estimates meet the Dafermos–Luk hypotheses, giving C0C^0 stability of the Cauchy horizon for the stated small vacuum perturbations of rotating subextremal Kerr Hintz 2026, v2, §1.1, consequence (1), p. 3, PDF. This current preprint does not prove generic curvature blowup, classify the complete singular boundary, or cover arbitrary collapse data.

For the following schematic formulas only, use G=c=1G=c=1. Here kμk_\mu is a wave covector, uμu^\mu an infalling four-velocity, vv the exterior-normalized advanced time, VV an inner-horizon coordinate regular at V=0V=0, and κ−>0\kappa_-\gt 0 the magnitude of the inner-horizon surface gravity. The functions r(u,v)r(u,v) and Ω(u,v)\Omega(u,v) are the areal radius and double-null lapse, while ϖ=mH+Q2/(2r)\varpi=m_H+Q^2/(2r) is the charge-renormalized Hawking mass. Three formulas organize the chapter:

ωobs=−kμuμ,V∼−e−κ−v,\omega_{\rm obs}=-k_\mu u^\mu, \qquad V\sim-e^{-\kappa_-v},

which expose blueshift;

1−2ϖr+Q2r2=−4Ω2 ∂ur ∂vr,1-\frac{2\varpi}{r}+\frac{Q^2}{r^2} =-\frac{4}{\Omega^2}\,\partial_u r\,\partial_v r,

which allows ϖ→∞\varpi\to\infty at finite rr; because Q2/(2r)Q^2/(2r) then remains finite, the geometric Hawking mass mHm_H diverges as well; and

∫τiτdτ′∫τiτ′dτ′′ ∣R0^i^0^j^(τ′′)∣,\int_{\tau_i}^{\tau}d\tau'\int_{\tau_i}^{\tau'}d\tau''\, \left|R_{\hat0\hat i\hat0\hat j}(\tau'')\right|,

which tests integrated tidal distortion. The normalization of null coordinates can change individual factors, but not the observer frequency, areal radius, mass relation, or transported-frame conclusion.

The double-null mass identity and its charged Einstein–scalar evolution equations are developed in Dafermos 2005, §§2–5, pp. 8–22, PDF.

Restoring dimensions in the mass relation, the physical Hawking mass is MH=c2mH/GM_{\rm H}=c^2m_H/G; the finite-radius statement is r→r0>0r\to r_0\gt 0 while MH→∞M_{\rm H}\to\infty.

An evolution has r→r0>0r\to r_0\gt 0, renormalized mass ϖ→∞\varpi\to\infty, a continuous nondegenerate metric limit in a regular chart, and a divergent parallel-propagated curvature component. State the conclusions that follow and those that do not.

Solution

Finite r0r_0 and divergent ϖ\varpi identify mass inflation rather than an immediate crushing r→0r\to0 endpoint; since Q2/(2r0)Q^2/(2r_0) is finite, mHm_H diverges too. The regular-chart limit establishes C0C^0 extendibility. Curvature blowup obstructs a compatible C2C^2 extension. These facts do not determine whether the connection is locally square integrable, whether tidal distortion is finite, whether continuation as a weak solution exists or is unique, or whether the same endpoint occurs for a generic nonsymmetric asymptotically flat data set.

The discussion does not replace the general formulation of strong cosmic censorship, prove an exterior decay theorem, or supply a production interior simulation. It also does not treat extremal horizons by continuity from κ−>0\kappa_-\gt 0: the extremal limit changes the estimates. Its conclusion is methodological and physical: interior endpoints are meaningful only when model, data, causal character, invariant blowup, and extension regularity are reported together.
