The phrase black-hole information problem can denote several logically different questions: whether the complete evolution is unitary, whether exterior observers can recover correlations, whether a smooth interior can coexist with that recovery, or whether an asymptotic scattering description exists at all. This chapter fixes the system, algebra, state, and approximation before asking for an answer. That discipline prevents ordinary subsystem entropy from being mistaken for fundamental loss of quantum information.

Helpful background. Semiclassical Gravity supplies the evaporation and backreaction approximations used to define the spacetime; Quantum Information supplies density operators, channels, and entropy inequalities; Quantum Fields in Curved Spacetime supplies the fixed-background Hawking calculation whose interpretation is at issue.

Begin with a complete system XX and a declared observable algebra AX\mathcal A_X. A microscopic formulation asks whether states evolve by a unitary operator,

ρX(t)=U(t)ρX(0)U(t)†,U†U=UU†=I.\rho_X(t)=U(t)\rho_X(0)U(t)^\dagger, \qquad U^\dagger U=UU^\dagger=I.

An exterior formulation instead retains a subsystem or subalgebra RR and discards its complement. Even when the complete state is pure, ρR=Tr⁡X∖RρX\rho_R=\operatorname{Tr}_{X\setminus R}\rho_X can be mixed. An operational formulation asks which observables an actual observer can measure before evaporation, causal separation, energy cost, or backreaction defeats the protocol. These questions are related, but none is a synonym for another.

The original semiclassical claim was stronger than the observation that radiation looks thermal. Hawking proposed that complete pure states could be mapped to mixed final states, so the ordinary unitary scattering operator would be replaced by a linear map on density operators Hawking 1976, §§ II–IV. Modern discussions therefore have to say whether they are challenging a microscopic unitary map, a semiclassical reduced state, an asymptotic observable algebra, or an operational reconstruction.

For an evaporating black hole, useful labels are the remaining black-hole degrees of freedom B(t)B(t), radiation already collected in a nongravitating region R(t)R(t), and any reference QQ that purifies the initial state. In a regulated finite-dimensional model,

HX(t)≃HB(t)⊗HR(t)⊗HQ.\mathcal H_X(t)\simeq \mathcal H_{B(t)}\otimes\mathcal H_{R(t)}\otimes\mathcal H_Q.

This factorization is a model input, not a theorem of gravity. Gauge constraints and gravitational dressing can prevent a sharp inside–outside tensor product. One can then formulate the problem with commuting or approximately commuting observable algebras instead. The distinction becomes decisive in later firewall and reconstruction arguments, because entropy inequalities require all named systems to belong to one consistent state description.

There are also several possible endpoints. If a remnant survives, it belongs to the complete final system. If correlations enter a baby-universe sector, that sector must be included before declaring the asymptotic state mixed. If an event horizon and singular endpoint are imposed by the leading semiclassical geometry, the missing interior degrees of freedom are no longer present on the chosen late slice. Each choice changes the map being tested.

The six pages proceed from the sharpest mathematical distinction to the broadest interpretive one.

  1. Pure-to-Mixed Evolution distinguishes a fundamentally nonunitary map on the complete system from the completely positive trace-preserving channel obtained by tracing out an environment.
  2. The S-Matrix Formulation states the asymptotic assumptions needed for an evaporation amplitude and explains why completeness of the out-space is part of the unitarity claim.
  3. Fine-Grained versus Coarse-Grained Information proves that complete von Neumann entropy is invariant under unitary conjugation while reduced or deliberately coarse-grained entropy may rise.
  4. Information Loss, Remnants, and Long-Lived Interiors compares where different resolution classes place the correlations and what each leaves unexplained.
  5. Assumption Map of the Paradox turns a verbal paradox into a minimal inconsistent set of explicitly testable premises.
  6. Operational and Algebraic Formulations asks whether the tension survives when systems are observable algebras and recovery is an actual protocol rather than a formal decoding map.

This order matters. A Page curve, an island calculation, or an interior reconstruction answers only the information question associated with its stated entropy, factorization, and observable algebra. Harlow’s review makes the same separation between semiclassical Hawking evolution, quantum-information constraints, and candidate microscopic descriptions Harlow 2016, §§ 4.6 and 5.1–5.4.

Section titled “Results and open questions as of 2026-08-19”

The mathematical distinctions above are stable, but their application to a complete theory of evaporating gravity remains unresolved. The evidence supports competing positions because different calculations hold different systems, factorization assumptions, and approximation regimes fixed.

Evidence or formulationResultScope and limitation
Semiclassical collapse calculation Hawking 1976, §§ II–IVExterior radiation is thermal to leading order and the proposed complete map is pure-to-mixedUses semiclassical fields on a geometry with a lost interior sector; it does not supply a microscopic quantum-gravity state space
Finite-dimensional quantum information Harlow 2016, Appendix CA unitary complete state may give mixed radiation after a partial traceExact for the declared tensor product; gravitational factorization and operational access require separate justification
Fine-grained gravitational entropy calculations Almheiri et al. 2021, §§ 4–6Controlled low-dimensional models can produce a Page transition for a specified radiation entropyEstablishes an entropy observable in those semiclassical models, not by itself a unique four-dimensional single-theory S-matrix
Operational recovery formulation Harlow 2016, §§ 5.3–5.7Formal recoverability can be separated from the complexity and causal cost of decodingDepends on the observer’s algebra, time budget, and backreaction; impossibility or feasibility is protocol-dependent

The conclusions could change after a microscopic model defines the complete asymptotic algebra and its unitary map, or after a controlled counterexample separates a decreasing gravitational entropy from information recovery, or after an operational protocol survives causal, complexity, and backreaction bounds.

A resolution of fundamental information loss must specify a complete initial and final state space and a trace-preserving, invertible quantum evolution on that space, or explain precisely why those requirements are replaced. A resolution of the Page-curve tension must additionally identify the radiation algebra whose fine-grained entropy turns over. A resolution of the interior-consistency tension must explain how late radiation correlations coexist with the near-horizon state and with a single consistent operator algebra.

These requirements do not demand that every exterior observable reveal the initial microstate. Thermal one-point functions can coexist with a globally pure state because the information may reside in high-order correlations. Conversely, a decreasing entropy computed in a gravitational model is not by itself a construction of a single-theory unitary S-matrix. The observable, state, gravitational path integral, and approximation determine what has actually been established.

Generic quantum-channel theory belongs to the preparation material, fixed-background particle creation belongs to Quantum Fields in Curved Spacetime, and stable black-hole thermodynamics belongs to Semiclassical Gravity. Here those ingredients are used only to formulate the information questions. Explicit string-theory or holographic microscopic constructions are treated separately rather than assumed.

Suppose a qubit SS begins in ∣+⟩\lvert +\rangle and interacts unitarily with an environment qubit EE initially in ∣0⟩\lvert0\rangle, producing (∣00⟩+∣11⟩)/2(\lvert00\rangle+\lvert11\rangle)/\sqrt2. Has information been destroyed?

Solution

No information has been destroyed in the complete system SESE: the final Bell state is pure and is related to the initial product state by a unitary operator. The reduced state ρS=I/2\rho_S=I/2 is mixed because tracing over EE discards the phase-sensitive correlations between the qubits. Calling this “information loss” is legitimate only as a statement about access to SS, not as a claim of fundamental nonunitarity. A complete black-hole formulation must say whether the analogue of EE remains part of the theory.
