Quantum-black-hole programmes must connect microscopic states and dynamics to a common set of macroscopic targets: horizon entropy, exterior geometry, interior evolution, evaporation amplitudes, and a controlled semiclassical limit. This chapter compares non-string approaches at those interfaces. Stable Hawking thermodynamics belongs to semiclassical gravity, Page curves and reconstruction to black-hole information, and explicit string microstates to the string-theory volume.
Helpful background. Flat-Spacetime Quantum Field Theory supplies quantization and amplitudes; Einstein Equations supplies exterior and interior geometry; Quantum Information supplies entropy and channels; Quantum Gravity supplies programme comparison; and Black-Hole Information supplies the information-recovery questions receiving microscopic input.
Common microscopic targets
Section titled “Common microscopic targets”A state count must say what is counted, which constraints remove gauge states, and which ensemble fixes area, energy, angular momentum, or charge. Quantum Horizon Degrees of Freedom compares punctures, boundary modes, algebraic edge sectors, and pregeometric candidates. A successful leading count should recover
but fitting the coefficient with an adjustable parameter is weaker than deriving it from independently fixed dynamics.
Entropy Targets and Logarithmic Corrections separates the leading area term from
The logarithmic coefficient can depend on ensemble, zero modes, massless field content, boundary conditions, and whether one computes statistical or entanglement entropy. Meaningful comparison holds those inputs fixed.
Interior and effective geometry
Section titled “Interior and effective geometry”Quantum Geometry of the Interior asks what replaces the classical singular region in invariant terms. A bounce in a symmetry-reduced radius variable is evidence inside that model; it must be embedded in constraint evolution, matched to an exterior, and checked for mass inflation, covariance, and semiclassical states.
Quantum-Corrected Black-Hole Solutions distinguishes metrics derived by varying a controlled effective action from “RG-improved,” polymerized, noncommutative, or regular metrics inserted as phenomenological ansätze. Horizon shifts and de Sitter cores can be useful observables of a model, but they do not by themselves show that the metric solves the microscopic theory.
The exterior is a demanding independent check. Far from curvature scales set by the completion, corrections should reduce to the known gravitational effective action and conserve the same stress energy. An interior resolution that produces order-one deviations at large radius without a mechanism conflicts with that limit.
Evaporation and information inputs
Section titled “Evaporation and information inputs”A corrected Hawking temperature supplies only a coarse energy flux. Unitary evaporation requires a microscopic state space, transition amplitudes, correlations among emissions, endpoint dynamics, and a map to the asymptotic radiation algebra. Evaporation and Information Interfaces specifies those outputs without reproducing Page-curve and island calculations developed in the Black-Hole Information volume.
Comparing Non-String Black-Hole Programmes then applies one matrix to loop, continuum, causal, discrete, and effective approaches: kinematics, physical constraints, dynamics, continuum limit, entropy, interior, exterior, evaporation, observables, and error control. “Non-string” is only a scope boundary; the programmes are not one scientific family and should not inherit evidence from one another.
Results and open questions through 2026-08-20
Section titled “Results and open questions through 2026-08-20”This discussion reflects results available through 2026-08-20. Several programmes derive striking partial results, but no non-string approach has a universally accepted chain from physical microscopic states through generic black-hole dynamics to a unitary radiation channel and semiclassical exterior. Competing positions interpret horizon state counts and singularity-replacing models as robust structural evidence, as kinematic results awaiting dynamics, or as effective parametrizations. The verdict remains unresolved and depends on the constraint, ensemble, continuum limit, and state.
| Target or programme result | Evidence at the cutoff | Scope and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Quantum-geometric area and horizon states | Discrete spectra and constrained counts yield area-law behavior in selected sectors Ashtekar and Lewandowski 2004, §§ VI–VIII | Physical-state constraints, parameter fixing, and dynamical formation remain incomplete |
| Logarithmic entropy corrections | Heat-kernel, symmetry, and microscopic counts produce calculable coefficients | Coefficients differ with ensemble, zero modes, and field content |
| Regular or bouncing interiors | Symmetry-reduced and effective equations replace divergent variables in many models | Covariance, generic perturbations, and exterior matching are formulation-dependent |
| Running-coupling metrics | Continuum flows motivate scale-dependent corrections | Scale identification and derivation from the full effective action remain uncertain |
| Evaporation mechanisms | Candidate transitions and endpoints have been proposed | Few calculations determine the complete radiation channel and correlations |
Low-energy EFT supplies a nonnegotiable boundary: universal long-distance quantum corrections are controlled without choosing a microscopic completion Donoghue 2023, §§ 3–5. A candidate must reproduce them rather than attribute every small correction to its distinctive microstructure.
The conclusions could change if a programme constructs physical black-hole states, derives their dynamics and continuum exterior, and computes a unitary radiation channel with quantified errors, or if an instability removes a claimed interior resolution; the interpretation could also change with agreement or conflict among independently derived logarithmic coefficients under matched ensembles.
Check your understanding
Section titled “Check your understanding”Diagnostic. A model counts kinematical horizon configurations and obtains . Which questions must be answered before this is a physical black-hole entropy?
Solution
One must specify the ensemble and area window, impose gauge and horizon constraints, identify which configurations are physical rather than redundant, and fix the parameter independently rather than only choosing to fit the area coefficient. The count should arise for states produced by black-hole dynamics, use the renormalized low-energy , and state which zero modes and charges determine the logarithmic term. Finally, it must connect to the semiclassical exterior and thermodynamic entropy. The formula is meaningful evidence, but kinematical counting alone does not complete that chain.
