Information-recovery proposals often answer different questions while using the same vocabulary. One may derive a unitary boundary evolution, another a semiclassical Page curve, another a smooth family of microstate geometries, and another an operational obstruction to decoding. These achievements are not interchangeable. This chapter supplies a common comparison that asks, for each proposal, what the complete quantum system is, how radiation entropy is computed, where horizon effective field theory changes, how the interior operator algebra avoids contradiction, whether one microscopic theory is defined, and which finite-error calculation or observation could test the claim.
Helpful background. Black-Hole Thermodynamics and Semiclassical Gravity supplies generalized entropy and approximation control; Quantum Information for Black-Hole Physics supplies channels, entropy, and recovery; Quantum Fields in Curved Spacetime supplies the fixed-background horizon calculation; Black-Hole Information supplies the paradox, QES, replica, reconstruction, and operational results compared here.
Enter this chapter
Section titled “Enter this chapter”A fair comparison begins with a specification rather than a verdict. Write a candidate framework as
where is the microscopic state space, the observable algebra, the allowed state family, the evolution or channel, the emergent spacetime description, the controlled errors, and the operational predictions. If a proposal does not define one entry, the comparison records it as unknown; it does not silently borrow that entry from a competing framework.
The six pages build the specification in a deliberate reading order.
| Page | Question | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Unitarity and Entropy Requirements | Is there a complete unitary map for one theory, and which entropy does it predict? | A system-, state-, and channel-level test of purity and Page behavior. |
| Horizon and Effective-Field-Theory Requirements | Where and by how much does semiclassical horizon physics change? | A scale-, state-, and observable-resolved EFT comparison. |
| Interior and Causality Requirements | Can interior and exterior operators coexist without accessible cloning or acausality? | An algebra, observer, and causal-access test. |
| Factorization and Microscopic Definition | Is the object a single theory, ensemble, sector, code subspace, or saddle? | A nonperturbative-definition and factorization test. |
| Dynamics, Errors, and Operational Tests | What controlled calculation could falsify the proposal? | Approximation, error, timescale, resource, and backreaction requirements. |
| Comparative Requirements for Information-Recovery Frameworks | What evidence would satisfy every requirement? | A six-axis matrix separating derivation, example, conjecture, unknown, and test. |
The order prevents a Page curve from being counted as a microscopic definition and prevents computational hardness from being counted as a dynamical recovery mechanism. It also makes disagreements local: two proposals can agree on unitarity and disagree only about the horizon algebra or operational cost.
Six independent requirements
Section titled “Six independent requirements”The comparison has six axes.
- Unitarity and entropy. Name the complete system, state, and evolution; state whether purity and energy are exact, approximate, conditional, or ensemble averaged; and derive the entropy of a declared radiation algebra.
- Horizon effective field theory. Specify the state, distance, frequency, time, and observable for which local QFT is retained or modified. “Small corrections” requires a norm and a cumulative bound.
- Interior and causality. Give the interior operator domain, commutators, state dependence, causal accessibility, and singularity or endpoint. The same observer must be able to perform any claimed duplication experiment.
- Factorization and definition. Identify whether path integrals compute a fixed theory, an ensemble moment, a conditioned sector, or a code-subspace observable. Connected saddles must be reconciled with the claimed boundary tensor product.
- Dynamics and errors. Supply an approximation parameter, first omitted term, error norm, initial and boundary data, and a calculation that follows correlations rather than only entropies.
- Operations and tests. Count copies, collection efficiency, memory, gates, time, energy, precision, and backreaction, then name an outcome that differs from a competitor.
These axes are independent. The AMPS argument, for example, is an interior- causality consistency test built from entropy assumptions; it does not define a replacement dynamics. Its exact subsystem assumptions and loopholes are set out in Almheiri et al. 2013, §§2–3 and Appendices A–C. Conversely, the island formula can satisfy a fine-grained entropy requirement in a bath model while leaving the efficient-decoder and fixed-theory questions open.
Labels that preserve information
Section titled “Labels that preserve information”Each matrix entry uses one of six descriptive labels.
| Label | Meaning | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Exact derivation | Follows from stated hypotheses with controlled equality | Universal validity outside those hypotheses |
| Controlled example | Computed with a quantified approximation in a named model | A generic four-dimensional microscopic solution |
| Consistency requirement | Must hold if the proposed claims are combined | A mechanism that enforces it |
| Conjecture | A sharpened claim with supporting evidence but no derivation in the asserted scope | Established fact |
| Unknown | The framework has not supplied the quantity or proof | Evidence of inconsistency |
| Operational prediction | A protocol gives distinguishable outcome probabilities and resource assumptions | Practical feasibility unless the budget closes |
The labels force negative and positive evidence to use the same standard. A counterexample outside a proposal’s declared regime does not refute it; a successful calculation in a special BPS sector does not establish typicality. Likewise, an existence theorem for recovery is not evidence that the recovery can be decoded before evaporation. The distinction between information- theoretic and computational claims is developed systematically in Harlow 2016, §§5.4–5.7 and Appendix E.
One worked comparison: islands
Section titled “One worked comparison: islands”Consider an evaporating semiclassical black hole coupled to a nongravitating bath. Replica saddles can yield
On the unitarity/entropy axis this is a controlled entropy result once state, bath, renormalization, saddle, and continuation are fixed. On the horizon-EFT axis it can retain an ordinary local horizon in the semiclassical region. On the interior axis the island may lie in the radiation entanglement wedge, so a code-subspace reconstruction statement becomes available. On the factorization axis, replica wormholes raise a separate question about ensemble averaging and the single-theory interpretation. On the dynamics axis, the formula does not provide individual amplitudes. On the operational axis, an existence statement for the radiation operator need not supply a feasible decoder.
This example shows why a proposal cannot receive one scalar score. The result is strong in a controlled entropy column and conditional or unknown in several others. The replica derivation, reconstruction statement, and remaining questions are reviewed in Almheiri et al. 2021, §§8–11. The distinction between a many-copy replica observable and the entropy assigned to one semiclassical state is developed in Marolf and Maxfield 2021, §§2–6.
Results and limits of the comparison
Section titled “Results and limits of the comparison”The following comparison covers results available through 2026-08-19. It summarizes representative approaches only; none is assigned a universal verdict.
| Proposal or result | Assumptions | Controlled result | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hawking information-loss channel, Hawking 1976, §§II–IV, pp. 2462–2471 | Semiclassical collapse, complete evaporation, and no additional correlated output sector | Formulates a density-operator superscattering map that need not preserve purity | Does not provide a microscopic quantum-gravity output space or distinguish every possible enlarged unitary completion |
| Islands and replica wormholes, Almheiri et al. 2020, §§2–6 | Low-dimensional or holographic bath model, specified state, replica saddles, contour, and continuation | Gives a controlled generalized-entropy turnover in the stated approximation | Single-theory interpretation, individual amplitudes, broad four-dimensional control, and feasible decoding are separate requirements |
| Holographic error correction, Dong, Harlow, and Wall 2016, complete Letter and proof | Finite regulated code, declared logical algebra and boundary region, and relative-entropy hypotheses | Establishes exact operator reconstruction under the theorem’s assumptions, with approximate variants requiring their own norm bounds | Code size, gravitational error conversion, state dependence, and computational efficiency limit the conclusion |
| Microstate constructions, Bena et al. 2022, §§2–8 | Protected string-theory sectors and explicitly constructed families of states or geometries | Supplies protected state-counting results and many nontrivial horizon-scale constructions | Typicality, generic collapse, horizon observables, and full radiation dynamics remain model-dependent or unresolved |
| Soft nonlocal transfer, Giddings 2013, §§2–5 | Effective atmosphere-scale couplings with declared state, operator support, and transfer rate | Provides a parameterized model class for correlation transfer without a Planckian wall | Microscopic origin, locality and stress-tensor control, and distinctive operational predictions remain open |
| Final-state projection, Horowitz and Maldacena 2004, §§2–3 and Gottesman and Preskill 2004, complete critique | Special entangled final boundary data and sufficiently controlled interior interactions | Can produce a teleportation-like conditional map in the idealized model | Generic interactions spoil exact unitarity unless additional fine tuning is imposed; normalization, linearity, and signaling require independent checks |
The conclusions could change if a fixed microscopic theory reproduces replica saddles with quantified nonperturbative errors, if a smooth-interior construction passes overlap and Born-rule tests on parametrically large state spaces, or if a feasible protocol distinguishes recovery mechanisms without invalidating its own semiclassical background. A change of terminology alone does not resolve these physical questions.
Review the chapter
Section titled “Review the chapter”A proposal derives a Page curve from an ensemble-averaged replica path integral and asserts that the information problem is solved. Classify what has and has not been established.
Solution
The derivation can establish a controlled fine-grained entropy result for the declared ensemble, state, bath, saddle set, continuation, and approximation. It does not yet establish unitarity of one fixed theory, individual radiation density-matrix elements, a Lorentzian transfer dynamics, factorization of disconnected boundaries, a large-domain interior reconstruction, or a feasible decoder. Those entries should be marked conditional or unknown, not failed. The next discriminating calculation is a fixed-theory observable or amplitude whose connected contribution, error, and operational meaning can be compared with the ensemble result.
