Congruence kinematics converts curvature into the expansion, shear, and rotation of families of worldlines or light rays. The Raychaudhuri equations are exact local identities. Focusing follows only after geodesic, twist, curvature-convergence, and initial-expansion hypotheses are imposed. Energy conditions enter one step earlier, through Einstein’s equation, and remain conditional assumptions rather than universal properties of matter.
Helpful background. Special-relativistic causal vectors and tensor fields support this overview.
Enter the chapter
Section titled “Enter the chapter”Start with congruence kinematics for the Raychaudhuri derivation, or with stress-energy for the energy-condition definitions. Einstein’s equation is needed when those matter inequalities are translated into curvature convergence. Applications to geodesic incompleteness require additional global causal structure.
For a unit timelike congruence in dimensions, the rest-space derivative decomposes into expansion , shear , and vorticity . For null curves the corresponding screen has dimension . This dimensional difference produces the coefficients
in the timelike and null Raychaudhuri equations. In four dimensions they are and . Shear assists focusing, twist opposes the elementary comparison, and Ricci curvature supplies the geometric convergence term.
MIT derives both identities and their scalar inequalities in one convention Guth–Turner 2017, Lectures 13–14, pp. 58–61, Eqs. (14.10)–(14.25), PDF. Every page here translates signs through the site’s commutator definition before applying an inequality.
Six proof-critical steps
Section titled “Six proof-critical steps”- Raychaudhuri Equations for Timelike and Null Congruences traces the deformation-tensor Riccati equation, retains acceleration and null nonaffinity, and checks both dimensional coefficients in flat expanding bundles.
- Null, Weak, Dominant, and Strong Energy Conditions states the causal quantifier in each definition, derives perfect-fluid inequalities, and proves only the valid implication directions.
- From Stress-Energy Conditions to Curvature Convergence trace-reverses Einstein’s equation in and shows why cancels for null contractions but shifts timelike convergence.
- The Timelike Focusing Theorem integrates the comparison inequality and proves a four-dimensional focal point by proper time at most .
- Null Focusing and Trapped-Surface Kinematics proves the bound , defines both future null expansions, and checks their signs on a round sphere in Minkowski spacetime.
- Violations and Limitations of Classical Energy Conditions uses nonminimal classical fields and quantum states to show why pointwise premises fail and why averaged replacements require new proofs.
The sequence is deliberately strict: identity → matter inequality → curvature translation → local theorem → trapped-surface kinematics → limitations. Reordering those steps is a common source of hidden assumptions.
From identities to bounds
Section titled “From identities to bounds”For a hypersurface-orthogonal timelike geodesic congruence with ,
If , integration of forces a focal point by . Null congruences give the same argument with . The divergence of expansion means that a Jacobi-volume determinant vanishes and the congruence description forms a caustic. It does not say that curvature diverges or that the geodesic cannot continue.
That boundary is visible even in flat spacetime: inward future null normals of a round sphere focus at its center. Curvature is zero, and the outgoing future expansion is positive, so the sphere is not trapped. Local focusing and global singularity are different conclusions.
Where matter enters
Section titled “Where matter enters”In Einstein gravity,
Null contraction gives , linking NEC to null convergence. Unit timelike contraction gives
Matter SEC maps to timelike convergence only when the cosmological term is absent, absorbed consistently, or overcome by the matter contraction. WEC alone controls measured energy density, not the trace-reversed combination.
Kontou and Sanders provide the energy-condition definitions, violations, focusing interfaces, and theorem boundaries used here Kontou and Sanders 2020, §§ 2–5.1, pp. 6–43, PDF.
Review the chapter
Section titled “Review the chapter”In four dimensions a twist-free affinely parametrized null congruence has , zero shear, and . What bound follows, and what does it not prove?
Solution
Null Raychaudhuri gives , so focusing occurs within affine interval
The conclusion is a focal point if the smooth congruence extends that far. It does not prove curvature blow-up, identify an event horizon, or establish geodesic incompleteness. Those require additional local regularity and global causal hypotheses.
Onward connection
Section titled “Onward connection”The final chapter, Weak-Field Gravity and Classic Predictions, returns to controlled observables: weak-field expansion, Newtonian gravity, static clock comparison, perihelion advance, light propagation delay, and gyroscope precession. The same discipline applies there—state the regime, derive the invariant reading, and do not promote an approximation beyond its hypotheses.
