Astronomical images, merger waveforms, analog horizons, and programmable quantum devices can all probe physics associated with black holes, but they do not probe the same claim. The decisive question is whether the measured data distinguish a fine-grained radiation state or channel from an ordinary model with the same local spectrum and near-horizon response. This page builds that observable ladder and states what would have to be added before “Hawking-like” or “horizon-scale” evidence became evidence for information recovery.
Required background. Quantum Information for Black-Hole Physics supplies states, channels, correlations, and measurements; What the Equivalence Principles Do and Do Not Imply supplies physical detectors, clocks, and the limits of local inference.
Helpful background. Semiclassical Gravity supplies evaporation and backreaction; Quantum Fields in Curved Spacetime supplies Hawking mode conversion; and Black-Hole Information supplies the fine-grained unitarity question.
An observable ladder
Section titled “An observable ladder”Four increasingly demanding targets should not be collapsed into one.
- Geometry and kinematics: image a compact region, measure a redshift, or identify a one-way characteristic surface for specified excitations.
- Linear response: measure mode conversion, a thermal occupation law, ringdown frequencies, dispersion, reflectivity, or an echo transfer function.
- Quantum correlations: establish nonclassical correlations between named modes relative to a specified field algebra and noise model.
- Fine-grained recovery: distinguish a pure global radiation state or a reversible channel from an incoherent state or channel that reproduces all tested coarse observables.
Each level constrains the mechanisms below it, but it does not automatically establish the next. In particular, a Planck-shaped spectrum is a one-body statement. Unitarity of complete evaporation is a statement about correlations across the full outgoing state and, ultimately, about a channel from initial to final data.
A two-qubit adverse check
Section titled “A two-qubit adverse check”The distinction is exact even in the smallest useful model. Compare
Tracing either state over the partner gives the same exterior marginal, . Every measurement confined to that exterior qubit therefore has identical statistics in the two cases. Yet the global purities are different,
and a joint measurement gives but . Thus a thermal marginal cannot decide whether the joint state is pure. Changing the access assumption from joint control to exterior-only control removes the discriminating observable; no increase in single-side spectral precision repairs that loss.
What analog horizons test
Section titled “What analog horizons test”In an irrotational fluid, linearized sound can propagate as a scalar field on an effective acoustic geometry. Up to a conformal factor, its line element has the schematic form
with a sonic horizon where the normal flow reaches the sound speed. This correspondence makes horizon kinematics, dispersion, stimulated or spontaneous mode conversion, and partner correlations experimentally accessible Barceló, Liberati, and Visser 2011, §§ 2–5. It does not make the medium obey the Einstein equations or give it the microscopic Hilbert space of a gravitational black hole.
In a Bose–Einstein-condensate analog, Steinhauer reported an approximately thermal phonon population and a nonseparability diagnostic for a range of Hawking-partner modes Steinhauer 2016, pp. 2–19 of the Open PDF. The controlled claim concerns the condensate, its Bogoliubov modes, the inferred correlations, and the experiment’s dispersion and calibration assumptions. Even a decisive phonon-entanglement measurement would test the quantum character and robustness of analog mode conversion, not whether a collapsing spacetime has a unitary fine-grained evaporation channel.
What astronomical signals test
Section titled “What astronomical signals test”For a four-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole, . Stellar and supermassive holes are consequently too cold for present observations of their Hawking quanta, and their complete evaporation is far outside an experimental time window. Electromagnetic and gravitational-wave observations instead probe the surrounding plasma, strong-field geometry, and linear or nonlinear response.
The Event Horizon Telescope inferred a crescent in M87*, calibrated geometric models against general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations, and found a deep central brightness depression consistent with strong lensing around a compact object Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration 2019, §§ 5–10. That is powerful evidence about horizon-scale structure. It is not a measurement of Hawking radiation purity, because many fine-grained states can share the same metric and time-averaged emission image.
Merger ringdown and echo searches similarly test remnant response and possible near-horizon reflectivity. The GWTC-3 analysis found its selected ringdowns consistent with general-relativistic remnant predictions and no evidence for post-merger echoes LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA 2025, §§ VIII A–B. A detected echo would require waveform, environmental, and exotic-compact- object comparisons before interpretation. A null echo result constrains named reflective models; it neither proves an event horizon at arbitrarily short scales nor measures an information-recovery map.
Quantum simulators and the system being verified
Section titled “Quantum simulators and the system being verified”A programmable device can repeatedly implement a known unitary circuit, partition its qubits into analog “black hole” and “radiation” registers, and measure Rényi moments, mutual information, or recovery fidelity. Repeatability and microscopic control make such devices much closer to the many-copy access model than an astrophysical source. They can validate algorithms, finite-size scaling, noise corrections, and consequences of a chosen Hamiltonian.
A concrete example is the finite-temperature recovery experiment of Bang and collaborators 2026, §§ II, IV.2–4 and Fig. 11. Their hardware implementation uses a binary sparse Sachdev–Ye–Kitaev model with eight Majorana fermions, a SWAP-injected diary, and a probabilistic decoder. It measures both the postselection probability and the recovery fidelity conditioned on that postselection. These are different quantities: excellent conditional recovery can coexist with a very low successful yield. For example, independent attempts with require 100 attempts on average per accepted result, even if .
The reported hardware curves use 10,000 shots per time point and five repeated runs. The comparison circuit uses variational state preparation and a single-step Trotter approximation; reference-based error mitigation improves agreement but leaves residual discrepancies. This is a test of a specified finite circuit, including its preparation and postselection costs. It does not establish a continuum gravity limit or unconditional recovery from an astrophysical hole.
The inferential boundary is equally important: the device verifies its implemented quantum channel and the quality of the proposed mapping. To infer a gravitational result, one must justify which symmetry, state family, observable algebra, continuum limit, and backreaction structure the simulator reproduces. Agreement with a Page-shaped curve is not unique evidence for a particular gravitational saddle or ultraviolet completion; many finite unitary circuits have that shape.
Results and open questions through 2026-08-19
Section titled “Results and open questions through 2026-08-19”This discussion reflects results available through 2026-08-19. A permissive position treats analog entanglement, simulator Page curves, and increasingly precise horizon-scale tests as a converging experimental program for information recovery. A conservative position accepts them as tests of kinematics, finite quantum channels, and compact-object response while reserving fine-grained verification for an observable that distinguishes pure recovery from a coarse mimic. An intermediate position regards these interfaces as discriminating components of proposals, provided every extrapolation and access assumption is reported. These competing positions remain unresolved because they assign different evidential weight to analog mappings and indirect constraints.
| Evidence or protocol and assumptions | Controlled result | Scope or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Two-qubit pair versus maximally mixed state; joint or exterior-only access as stated | Equal exterior marginals coexist with global purity and correlation differences. | Exact adverse check: local thermality cannot establish global unitarity; joint access is decisive. |

| M87* interferometry in Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration 2019, §§ 5–10 | A calibrated crescent and central brightness depression constrain horizon-scale geometry and emission models. | Plasma and GRMHD modeling enter; no fine-grained radiation state is collected. |
| GWTC-3 remnant tests in LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA 2025, §§ VIII A–B | Selected ringdowns were consistent with GR, with no detected post-merger echoes in the analyzed events. | Constrains waveform-scale response and named echo models, not purity, decoding, or all microscopic structures. |
| Eight-Majorana sparse-SYK recovery circuit in Bang and collaborators 2026, § IV.4 | Postselection probability and conditional recovery fidelity are measured separately. | Finite size, preparation, Trotter error, and noise mitigation enter; dynamical gravity is not simulated. |
No row is a direct measurement of an astrophysical Page curve. The robust conclusion is a comparison of regimes: analog systems test universal field kinematics, simulators test chosen finite quantum dynamics, and telescopes test compact-object geometry and response. Fine-grained recovery requires additional state- or channel-sensitive data that a coarse model cannot reproduce.
Interpreting astronomical and laboratory tests
Section titled “Interpreting astronomical and laboratory tests”Tests of Gravity is where detector analyses, waveform and image systematics, and current observational bounds are developed. Reproducible calculations accompany the relevant scientific discussions, with numerical methods developed in Computational Relativity. This page supplies the information-theoretic interface between those results and a unitarity claim; the illustrative evaporation computation is not treated as an existing dataset or experiment.
Generic analog-gravity derivations, instrument pipelines, source population inference, and simulator engineering remain outside this page. The conclusions could change after an astronomical protocol measures a genuinely fine-grained radiation invariant, or a laboratory analog distinguishes unitary recovery from a matched coarse channel under controlled scaling, or a simulator-to- gravity map survives continuum, algebra, resource, and backreaction checks.
Exercise
Section titled “Exercise”An analog-horizon experiment measures a Planck-shaped outside spectrum and a nonseparability witness between accessible outside and partner phonons. Which rungs of the observable ladder does this reach, and what is still missing from a claim of gravitational information recovery?
Solution
The spectrum reaches linear response, and a validated nonseparability witness reaches quantum correlations for the named condensate modes. The result is stronger than local thermality alone. It still lacks dynamical Einstein gravity, a collapse-and-evaporation channel, the complete outgoing radiation algebra, and a comparison that distinguishes a pure recovered state from a coarse model with the same measured marginals. One must also justify the analog mapping, dispersion regime, state preparation, detector noise, and scaling. Therefore it tests important Hawking kinematics without directly verifying black-hole unitarity.
