After an island becomes part of the generalized-entropy wedge of radiation, the claim is that the island’s operator algebra is recoverable from the declared radiation algebra on a controlled code subspace. In the standard bath model this is the algebra of a nongravitating radiation region. In massless gravity it can instead be an asymptotic, gravitationally dressed algebra. Neither statement says that a local signal carried a second copy of the interior into the radiation.
Required background. Quantum Information supplies complementary recovery, relative entropy, and multi-copy observables; Gauge Theory and String-Theory Preparation supplies holographic encoding, gauge constraints, and dressed asymptotic observables.
Helpful background. Semiclassical Gravity supplies island QESs; Quantum Fields in Curved Spacetime supplies bath and asymptotic field algebras; Black-Hole Information supplies the Page transition and replica derivation.
Which radiation algebra?
Section titled “Which radiation algebra?”In a transparent nongravitating-bath model, choose a regulated bath region and its algebra . For an island bounded by the minimizing QES, let be the regulated bulk effective-field-theory algebra in , including any center or dressing prescription. The island formula uses
on the island-dominant branch. Entanglement-wedge reconstruction sharpens this entropy statement: for code states and suitable , equality of relative entropies supports an with
on the declared code, exactly or within a stated error. The bath algebra is not the algebra of all formal Hawking modes; it is the region and collection protocol actually included in .
The recovery interpretation of the island branch is developed in Penington 2020, §§2–4 and in the replica-wormhole calculation Almheiri et al. 2020, §6.
Why the Page transition changes recovery
Section titled “Why the Page transition changes recovery”Before the transition, the empty-island QES is minimal and is not in the radiation wedge. In a finite-code analogy, the complementary black-hole channel can still distinguish the interior logical data, so the radiation channel is not sufficient for . After the nonempty QES becomes minimal, the generalized-entropy wedge assigned to includes ; semiclassical relative-entropy matching then supplies the recovery criterion.
This is a change of the leading reconstruction map, not a literal motion of the QES data through spacetime. The two saddle values can cross sharply at leading order while finite-entropy corrections smooth the exact answer. Near the crossing, neither branch should be used without its correction and error estimate.
Multiple overlapping radiation subsets can support different representatives when each satisfies the appropriate wedge condition. Their overlap is essential if each reconstructs a full noncommuting logical algebra. To see why, suppose disjoint regions reconstruct logical operators and with representatives . Disjoint physical support gives , while intertwining gives . An isometric then requires , contradicting full qubit recovery. Shared commuting central labels are an allowed exception. Agreement only on the code does not by itself evade this no-cloning argument.
Existence also differs from feasibility: the recovery channel can have exponential circuit complexity or require many accurately controlled radiation quanta.
Beyond an auxiliary nongravitating bath
Section titled “Beyond an auxiliary nongravitating bath”A gravitating radiation region does not have a naïve local tensor factor because constraints and dressing reach infinity. The algebra must instead be defined by asymptotic or relational observables, with background symmetries and soft or charged sectors specified. An auxiliary bath is therefore a convenient clean factorization, not automatically a universal prerequisite.
Antonini, Chen, Maxfield, and Penington 2025, §§2–3 give massless-gravity and asymptotically flat examples in which the island/reconstruction logic is formulated using an asymptotic algebra and many-copy measurement protocols. Their §§4.1–4.6 argue that, on backgrounds without isometries, certain gravitational observables are compact to all perturbative orders. Entanglement-wedge reconstruction then supplies a microscopic, nonperturbative radiation representative whose agreement with the island operator is controlled to the order at which that semiclassical operator is defined.
The qualifications are essential. The algebra depends on asymptotic boundary conditions and background symmetries. Entropy or swap measurements may require many independent preparations, so they are not ordinary one-copy local measurements. The microscopic radiation representative does not establish that the corresponding bulk operator has exact nonperturbative compact support, nor does perturbative matching bound corrections beyond all orders. Restoring an isometry, changing the charge sector, or changing the code can alter the result. The paper is a frontier extension beyond bath-only examples, not a theorem for arbitrary quantum gravity.

The bath-code position treats as an ordinary nongravitating regional algebra. The asymptotic-algebra position argues that massless gravity supplies sufficiently rich dressed observables without a bath. A conservative position accepts the entropy and relative-entropy saddle while withholding a one-copy operational decoder. These competing positions use different algebras and access models, so they must not be merged into a single universal claim.
Adverse checks and limitations
Section titled “Adverse checks and limitations”Change the code family so that backreaction moves the QES outside the wedge of . A recovery map constructed for the original family need not act correctly on the enlarged states. Change the asymptotic symmetry or omit a charged sector, and the claimed radiation algebra may no longer separate the relevant states. Restrict the observer to one copy, and a many-copy swap measurement may cease to be available even though its expectation value is mathematically defined.
A Page curve is therefore necessary evidence for the proposed wedge transition but not sufficient evidence for a microscopic decoding channel. Gravitational dressing, finite- error, factorization, and complexity remain separate axes.
The conclusions could change after a no-auxiliary-bath construction controls the bulk operator and its radiation representative beyond perturbation theory for a specified asymptotic algebra, after its many-copy protocol receives a feasible resource and backreaction analysis, or after an explicit charged or symmetry-breaking counterexample changes the claimed island algebra.
Exercises
Section titled “Exercises”Compare two toy encodings of a logical state : before the transition, ; after it, . Which region reconstructs the logical algebra in each case, and why is there no cloning?
Solution
For , the radiation state is fixed and contains no logical information, while carries and reconstructs the full algebra. For , the roles reverse: reconstructs and is fixed. At no stage do both tensor factors contain independent copies of an arbitrary state. The toy encodings model a change of correctable region, not a unitary time evolution between the two formulas or a mechanism for evaporation.
