Near-horizon effective field theory links smooth infall to short-distance entanglement across the horizon. If a late exterior mode BB is removed from its vacuum entanglement with an independent interior partner AA while the standard state-independent local operators are retained, an infalling detector sees excitations. Avoiding that drama requires changing factorization, operator identification, locality, or the domain of the effective theory—not merely relabeling the same product state as a vacuum.

Required background. Quantum Information supplies purification, trace distance, fidelity, and monogamy used to compare horizon states.

Helpful background. Semiclassical Gravity supplies the large smooth-horizon regime; Quantum Fields in Curved Spacetime supplies Hadamard states, Rindler modes, and detector response; Black-Hole Information supplies the post-Page purification premise.

For a freely falling wave packet near a large nonextremal horizon, local geometry is approximately Minkowski while outgoing Schwarzschild modes are highly boosted. In a free bosonic two-mode approximation, an infalling annihilation operator takes the Bogoliubov form

aω=cosh⁡rω bω−sinh⁡rω b~ω†,tanh⁡rω=e−βω/2.a_\omega=\cosh r_\omega\,b_\omega -\sinh r_\omega\,\widetilde b_\omega^\dagger, \qquad \tanh r_\omega=e^{-\beta\omega/2}.

bωb_\omega is exterior and b~ω\widetilde b_\omega is its interior partner. The two-mode vacuum is annihilated both by aωa_\omega and by its companion a~ω=cosh⁡rω b~ω−sinh⁡rω bω†\widetilde a_\omega=\cosh r_\omega\,\widetilde b_\omega-\sinh r_\omega\,b_\omega^\dagger. These two conditions specify the normalized squeezed state,

∣0⟩aa~=1−e−βω∑n=0∞e−nβω/2∣n⟩B∣n⟩A.\lvert0\rangle_{a\widetilde a} =\sqrt{1-e^{-\beta\omega}}\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}e^{-n\beta\omega/2} \lvert n\rangle_B\lvert n\rangle_A.

This entanglement reproduces the Hadamard short-distance correlations needed for finite renormalized stress energy in a freely falling frame. The factorization into regulated packets is approximate, but the local singularity structure is not a decorative detail: severing correlations at arbitrarily short distance generically produces high-frequency response.

Harlow states the near-horizon mode and old-hole assumptions used by the firewall argument in Harlow 2016, §§ 7.1–7.2. The calculation is reliable only for wavelengths above the cutoff and curvatures small compared with that cutoff.

Suppose ordinary factorization holds and post-Page purification makes BB strongly entangled with early radiation EE. Monogamy then prevents BB from simultaneously being nearly pure with independent AA. In the standard operator assignment, a generic replacement for the squeezed ABAB state has

⟨Na⟩=⟨aω†aω⟩>0.\langle N_a\rangle =\langle a_\omega^\dagger a_\omega\rangle\gt0.

For an outgoing wave packet of fixed positive Killing frequency traced toward the future horizon, its frequency measured by a regular infaller grows without bound in the ideal geometric-optics limit. This is not a statement that every freely falling packet has divergent energy, nor that the regular vacuum has divergent stress. Order-one changes in sufficiently short-distance outgoing correlations can nevertheless produce large local stress energy. A firewall is the strong interpretation: the near-horizon state contains energetic excitations rather than the infalling vacuum.

An explicit oscillator check keeps the thermal marginals unchanged while replacing the squeezed state by their product. Write nˉ=sinh⁡2rω\bar n=\sinh^2r_\omega. In the squeezed vacuum the cross-correlator is ⟨bωb~ω⟩=sinh⁡rωcosh⁡rω\langle b_\omega\widetilde b_\omega\rangle=\sinh r_\omega\cosh r_\omega, and it cancels the occupation terms in ⟨Na⟩\langle N_a\rangle. In the product of the two thermal marginals this correlator vanishes, giving

⟨Na⟩product=cosh⁡2rω nˉ+sinh⁡2rω (nˉ+1)=2nˉ(nˉ+1).\langle N_a\rangle_{\mathrm{product}} =\cosh^2r_\omega\,\bar n +\sinh^2r_\omega\,(\bar n+1) =2\bar n(\bar n+1).

Thus identical exterior occupation numbers can describe different infalling excitations. This finite-frequency calculation alone does not determine a continuum stress tensor; that requires the complete frequency dependence and renormalization.

This conclusion is conditional. The number operator NaN_a is defined from the standard state-independent interior and exterior modes. If AA is encoded in exterior degrees of freedom, if the relevant algebra does not factorize, or if the interior operator exists only on a code subspace, then the same formula may not define an independent observable. Such a move must construct a replacement that still gives the Hadamard correlators and sensible commutators.

There are four principal axes.

State. Retain local factorization and operator definitions but replace the vacuum pair. This produces some degree of drama; the energy scale and distribution must be calculated.

Factorization. Deny that AA, BB, and EE are independent systems. Then the entropy argument changes, but the proposed gravitational algebra must explain its centers, dressing, and approximate locality.

Operator domain. Define the infalling operator only on a semiclassical code subspace or relative to a reference state. This can reproduce selected correlators, but linearity and agreement on overlapping domains become essential.

Locality or dynamics. Introduce nonlocal transfer or order-one horizon-scale interactions that correlate BB with EE without exciting the infaller. The mechanism must respect causality at tested scales and show why its stress energy remains small.

Small independent corrections to each Hawking pair do not solve the entropy problem under Mathur’s hypotheses Mathur 2009, §§ 4–6. A successful EFT modification must be structurally large in the relevant entanglement relation even if local observables receive small corrections.

Represent the smooth pair by ∣Φ+⟩AB\lvert\Phi^+\rangle_{AB} and define the “vacuum test” projector P0=∣Φ+⟩⟨Φ+∣P_0=\lvert\Phi^+\rangle\langle\Phi^+\rvert. Its excitation probability is

pexc=1−Tr⁡(P0ρAB).p_{\mathrm{exc}}=1-\operatorname{Tr}(P_0\rho_{AB}).

For the smooth state, pexc=0p_{\mathrm{exc}}=0. If BB is maximally mixed because it is Bell-entangled with EE and AA is an independent pure qubit, then ρAB=IB/2⊗∣0⟩⟨0∣A\rho_{AB}=I_B/2\otimes\lvert0\rangle\langle0\rvert_A, giving Tr⁡(P0ρAB)=1/4\operatorname{Tr}(P_0\rho_{AB})=1/4 and pexc=3/4p_{\mathrm{exc}}=3/4. The standard infalling test therefore detects an order-one change.

The countermodel is finite and has no blueshift, stress tensor, or gravity. Its role is discriminating: the only way to call the second state smooth is to change the vacuum projector, its domain, or the independence of AA. That is exactly the premise a full proposal must expose.

It remains unresolved which near-horizon EFT premise changes in a complete theory of an old black hole. Competing positions retain different combinations of the standard state, factorization, operator algebra, and locality regime.

The firewall position changes the horizon state. The encoding position changes factorization. State-dependent approaches change the operator domain, while conservative EFT reasoning withholds extrapolation once the assumptions conflict. Evidence for approximate compactness competes with the adverse dressing argument; neither alone constructs the full interior.

The conclusions could change after a microscopic calculation produces the full infalling stress tensor for generic old-hole states, or after an algebraic theorem controls factorization errors at the entanglement scale, or after a code-subspace interior passes linearity, overlap, commutator, and higher-correlator tests.

The mode model does not derive a dynamical firewall or determine its energy profile. Generic horizon QFT belongs to Quantum Fields in Curved Spacetime, backreaction to Semiclassical Gravity, and explicit holographic interiors elsewhere. The robust conclusion is conditional: removing vacuum entanglement while retaining standard local independent modes creates infalling excitation.

In the qubit vacuum test, suppose the fidelity with ∣Φ+⟩\lvert\Phi^+\rangle is 0.980.98. What is the excitation probability, and does this number alone establish a low infalling energy in QFT?

Solution

The projector test gives pexc=1−0.98=0.02p_{\mathrm{exc}}=1-0.98=0.02. This shows closeness for one regulated two-qubit observable. It does not establish low stress energy in continuum QFT, which depends on correlations across frequencies, ultraviolet scaling, the Hadamard condition, and detector response. A proposal must control those quantities and the regulator limit rather than extrapolate one finite-mode fidelity.
