An island calculation combines a holographic geometric input with a general information-theoretic conclusion. This page develops the geometric input: the bulk saddle, the generalized-entropy functional, admissible quantum extremal surfaces, and their embedding in an asymptotically AdS or string construction. General Page-curve logic, replica factorization, and recovery criteria belong to Black-Hole Information. Distinguishing these ingredients prevents a semiclassical saddle from being mistaken for a microscopic unitarity proof.

Required background. Quantum Information supplies reduced states and joint-region entropy, while Gauge Theory and String-Theory Preparation supplies the boundary dual, large-N expansion, and bulk saddle. Helpful background. Quantum Gravity supplies generalized entropy and gravitational path integrals, and Black-Hole Information supplies Page curves, replica assumptions, and reconstruction criteria.

Fix a nongravitating radiation region RR in a prepared bath state and a gravitating region coupled through declared interface conditions. For each admissible island II in the gravitating region, with boundary X=∂IX=\partial I, define

Sgen(R∪I)=Sgrav(X)+Sbulk,ren(R∪I)+Slocal(X).S_{\rm gen}(R\cup I) =S_{\rm grav}(X)+S_{\rm bulk,ren}(R\cup I)+S_{\rm local}(X).

In Einstein gravity, Sgrav=Area⁡(X)/(4GN)S_{\rm grav}=\operatorname{Area}(X)/(4G_N); in JT gravity it is the appropriately normalized dilaton value. The bulk term is the entropy of the joint algebra on R∪IR\cup I, not the entropy of II alone. The empty island is an admissible candidate. The leading semiclassical prescription is

S(R)=min⁡Iext⁡∂ISgen(R∪I).S(R)=\min_I\operatorname*{ext}_{\partial I} S_{\rm gen}(R\cup I).

The order matters. Extremization enforces the local QES equation on each branch; minimization selects the dominant already-extremized saddle, including the empty branch. The geometric derivation and first-order displacement are developed on Quantum Extremal Surfaces. Replica-wormhole derivations in explicit bath models give this structure under replica symmetry and analytic-continuation assumptions Almheiri et al. 2020, §§ 2–5.

What the holographic construction supplies

Section titled “What the holographic construction supplies”

A holographic or string embedding can supply data that the abstract island formula leaves unspecified:

  • the microscopic boundary theory or brane construction and the regime in which a semiclassical bulk exists;
  • the bulk action, Newton constant, higher-derivative couplings, light-field content, and allowed topologies;
  • the bath interface and transparent or reflecting boundary conditions;
  • the renormalization prescription matching the area or dilaton term to bulk entropy;
  • the admissible extremal surfaces, homology constraint, and gravitational saddle weights.

These inputs determine whether a proposed island is actually a saddle and which corrections are controlled. RT and HRT provide the classical geometric ancestor of the region/surface map Ryu and Takayanagi 2006, complete article, pp. 1–4 and its covariant extension Hubeny, Rangamani, and Takayanagi 2007, §§ 2–4. A string embedding can test factorization and saddle interpretation in a particular UV-complete boundary model, but an explicit string construction is not required merely to write the semiclassical QES equation.

Conversely, a two-dimensional effective model does not automatically specify one exact microscopic theory. JT gravity can encode universal near-extremal dynamics or an ensemble-averaged description, depending on its completion. One must state whether the bath is nongravitating, which degrees of freedom are integrated over, and whether an ensemble or a fixed boundary Hamiltonian is meant. Those distinctions affect the information interpretation even if the same local dilaton extremization is performed.

Relating holographic calculations to information theory

For example, an evaporating JT-plus-bath calculation can show that a nonempty QES saddle becomes smaller than the empty saddle. That is a controlled geometric entropy result under its path-integral assumptions. The inference that the radiation encodes the island additionally invokes entanglement-wedge reconstruction; the general criterion is developed on Island Reconstruction from Radiation. The Page-curve interpretation belongs on The Unitary Page Curve, and replica-continuation issues belong on Replica Symmetry, Continuation, and Contours.

The empty branch often grows with radiation time because Hawking partners accumulate. A nonempty branch pays an area or dilaton cost but can have much smaller joint entropy once II contains the partners correlated with RR. Their crossing gives a Page-like turnover. Explicit semiclassical evaporating solutions exhibit this competition Almheiri, Mahajan, Maldacena, and Zhao 2020, §§ 2–4, while the interpretation of a radiation wedge containing an interior region is sharpened by Penington 2020, §§ 2–4.

Four limitations travel with the result. First, the bath factorization and interface are part of the model. Second, the replica continuation and integration contour are assumptions, not consequences of the n=1n=1 QES equation. Third, saddle dominance computes a semiclassical entropy but does not exhibit the exact radiation density matrix or a feasible decoder. Fourth, string-loop, finite-N, higher-derivative, and topology-changing corrections may compete near branch degeneracy.

The clean independent check is to follow every conclusion backward through the table. If changing the microscopic embedding alters only SgravS_{\rm grav} or the allowed saddles, it is a holographic correction. If the disputed step concerns subsystem factorization, Page-curve sufficiency, or recovery from radiation, it belongs to the information analysis. No assumption should silently cross that seam.

Compute a branch crossing and classify the inference. In a schematic model with dimensionless time 0≤t≤300\leq t\leq30, let the already-extremized empty-island branch be S∅(t)=2tS_\varnothing(t)=2t and the nonempty branch be SI(t)=30−t/2S_I(t)=30-t/2. Find the crossing, select the dominant branch on each side, and state which conclusion still requires information-theoretic input. The finite time window is part of this toy model; extrapolating its descending straight line indefinitely would give an unphysical negative entropy.

Solution

Equating the branches gives 2t=30−t/22t=30-t/2, so tcross=12t_{\rm cross}=12 and both entropies equal 2424. Before that time the empty branch is smaller; afterwards the nonempty branch is smaller. The geometric calculation therefore establishes a change of dominant generalized-entropy saddle in the declared model. Interpreting the curve as the fine-grained entropy of a factorized radiation subsystem, or asserting that radiation operators reconstruct the island, additionally requires the subsystem, replica, and recovery assumptions treated in Black-Hole Information.
